Beer and Drugs Will Leave You in the Dark

It's a steamy night here in Miami. What's new? This is what's new. It was quite an interesting week for me. Many of you read about my encounter with a disgruntled cashier at the FIU bookstore. I also gave a talk on oil and responsibility and started my week off by inadvertently biking into a homeless squatter community around American Airlines Arena downtown. But Many of you heard about and listened to me describe the account of my power being cut off this week. I'm not going to go into the details here, but if you want to hear the full story I'll be glad to tell you. Short version: the bill wasn't paid, which wasn't my responsibility. Which brings me to my point, it was my responsibility.
You see, the moments leading up to my power getting turned off played out in my mind about a week before, when certain practices and habits were being brought to light (yes I'm being shady and mysterious on purpose). The end result was of course unpredictable, however I knew that I was going to get the short end of the stick. But what am I really getting at? I'm not real sure, because I'm just saying what people have known for centuries. If you don't pay your bill, you lose what you were getting. But maybe what I've realized is that it doesn't really matter if someone screws up, fails, or blows all of their money still leaves you sweating through a Miami night. What matters is what happens afterward. And this could, and should be applied to the BP oil spill. Yes it sucks, for the Environment and the People. But it's not the end of the world. The people that will come out on top are the innovators, the problem solvers, and the faithful. How we react and the choices we make will determine what direction, and how far we go. We got punched in the face. Do we complain about being punched or fight back (and by fight back I mean get through this and move on). Should the responsible parties be held accountable....yes. But there comes a time when you have to take responsibility, just to make sure 'it' gets done.

NOTE: Yes, have a beer. No, don't spend all of your money on it.
