So today went mostly like this: Sitting in a windowless room with no ceiling. A roof yes, but no ceiling. I swear the walls moved in closer I looked down at my work. I chatted with Becca on Facebook. I chatted with Sallie on Facebook. I commented on Drew's status. He commented on my well thought out and humorous comment. I had four updates, which is high for me. I tried talking to a high school kid who works across the hall but refuses to look me in the eye. However he is always very well dressed. I was bored. I was caught up on work and couldn't water my plants anymore. So I went to get coffee.
Everyone I know on campus has their own shop are maker to get coffee. Mine is Bustelo. I go because they make it strong and I can Practice my Spanish. But upon leaving I ran into some friends of mine working the Wesley table. We talked about Spanish (what I was doing wrong, what to do next time), Wesley, and making your own parking spots. It was there that my day turned around. Because I later had the pleasure of carrying on that conversation with one of them that lasted an hour and half. Stories and experiences always seem to work it getting me into a better mood. And then the night only got better because of the food.
In my last post I wrote about the food. Now I want to write about the food. It's amazing down here. Back home there are some 'good' restaurants. But they have no character. The menu has stayed the same for years. And also they just plain use too much salt. Here they have everything you might be able to think of (figuratively). But what I had tonight was the best thing I've eaten since I've been down here. It was Churrasco cooked medium with rice and plantains. And I kid you not when I say that this was one of the most tender and flavorful cuts of beef I've ever had, Nicaraguan style. There was also this topping (I had my choice of three) that was some kind of green herb in oil. I kept pressing the waitress to tell me what it was but she didn't know how to say it in English and I was left with a taste buds fully satisfied but my mind and therefore my Moleskine wanting. But it's okay.....I will go back, and I will take my Spanish speaking friends with me. And we will find out what that green herb is.
All of my culinary explorations as of late have been in a rebellion against fast food and an attempt to go simple and fresh (can you tell I just finished a Book about food?). So stop eating bad food, find out how to cook for yourself, and please please stop using so much salt.
