There's a Difference in Fund Raising, and Begging

This post is going to be hastily done because I have a final to give. But I wanted to get my frustration out while it's fresh.

Few things bug me to extremes. But people (friends) will tell you that those things that get under my skin really get under my skin and I make no effort to hide it. (I'm really sorry waitress at Cheeseburger in Paradise, but seriously what waitress asks people in a restaurant 'What are you doing' as a greeting. We are there to eat or drink! That was the straw that broke the camels back that night.) Anyway, there has been a group of "Environmentalists" here on campus this summer and they won't leave, or even pick a new spot to beg, I mean fund raise. Oh they think they're slick.

'Hi, do you have just one minute to protect our beaches?'

What they should say is...

'Hi, while I give you a brief intro with a big smile please get out your wallet. Don't have Cash? That's OK I have the capability to write down a credit card number." Wink

I understand the need to fund raise. It's a necessary part of any NGOs existence. But I don't see the Red Cross, Habitat for Humanity, or any respectful organization begging for money everyday outside the library. Wait, begging college kids for money.

Once again this should be what they say.

"Would you like to enroll in Environment Florida?, We're going to send you a newsletter saying that we protect our beaches even though there is currently a federal moratorium on off-shore drilling and a state statute banning drilling in this area."

There persistence has almost turned me into a proponent of off-shore drilling. You would think they'd learn. "Don't ask the bald one for cash, he's getting more violent by the day. But what really upsets me is I see the unsuspecting victims, yes victims, pulling out cash and cards for what they think is a one time donation only to learn of a annual 'gift'. And of course there's more to it than I write about. I had a friend apply for a job with them but turned when he discovered how much money was being spent on not on beach protection. They are actually spending more money on the getting money part than actual environmental issues. I guess it's the more money you raise the more you can spend. Not, "hey let's use our money wisely". I feel like going on a protest.

No, because then I would have to write about what a hypocrite I am.

Final Note: If an organization is on campus raising money, it's usually by a student chapter, not people who are professional beggars.

I've got a Final to give.

  1. "This summer"? Ha! They were there when I started back in '08 and have never left, right now it's beaches because of the whole BP thing but previously it's been anything, the Everglades, coral, etc.
