Today was one of those days where negativity ruled the day. It's not often that we have just one bad experience after another, but it happens. Today, everywhere I went, people were trying to one up each other. Surfing, driving, at the store. IT just seemed that everyone was in desperate need of some self worth.
It's easy to explain surfing. Today was the first waves that my homebreak has seen in at least three weeks. Put thirty people in the water and you can be sure that there will be some one upmanship and people trying to get all they can. Unfortunately, tomorrow is going to be worse, bigger waves on a Saturday. But I couldn't quite put my finger on the other reasons. Surely there was something in the air that was making people less amiable toward each other. Maybe the stickiness of Biden and Ryan fell upon the whole country today and we are desperately trying to shake it off. Aside from the wind, Miami couldn't have been any more beautiful.
today.
A lot of people are hurting right now. A lot of people are struggling, and not where they want to be. But we can't forget that we have a responsibility toward each other to keep this whole thing called society from collapsing. We can't let differences so fragment that glue that we fail to realize that we need each other. The good news is that there is tomorrow. We can stop the cycle of negative reciprocity and be the little change that sets off a new chain of positive interactions. So maybe if we just step back and see that things are not so bad and that there will always be another wave, another beer, or another chance to make it right, we'll be ok.
