So I have had a roller coaster of emotions about this oil spill, rather oil flow. My conclusion....we're screwed. Or just screwed up. Not necessarily ecologically. For the short term yes, it's messed up. Long term, that remains to be seen, but it seems very likely that the same is true. I am in no way saying that the ecological disaster is anything short of catastrophic. But, will something like this happen again. YES! And if we're looking for someone to blame. Here it is.....it's our fingers. Yes our fingers (mostly the index finger) should take the fall....and all the the hate and frustration. However there is a trick our fingers have up their sleeve. They can take the blame and deflect it, simply by pointing at someone else. It's where we are are in our society today. Everything has to work in our favor and to the betterment of ourselves, no exceptions. No where is this more evident than in economics and money. We participate in financially risky practices, and then demand to be bailed-out (just take a look at the amount of individual credit debt in this country). Here we are, 50 something days into this disaster and the demand by politicians and special interest groups are calling for dropping of the moratorium on offshore drilling (public opinion is dwindling however http://www.treehugger.com/files/2010/05/more-americans-now-oppose-offshore-drilling-than-support-poll.php ). It seems today that we can't be satisfied or inconvenienced in any way. We have this ideal, capitalism, right? What happen to if you don't work, you fail. Why can't we build better cities? Why can't we invest in cleaner energy? Why do we go to school at TROY, live down the street from campus, and drive a car? Oh, and complain about the parking.........Maybe there are too many cars because everyone drove. We can't, excuse me, won't do those things because of inconvenience. Which gets me back on topic.
Right now we are a snake eating its tail. And unless we start opening our mind to other things, we will continue until we are consumed. And that finger.....should be turned around on ourselves. Check the links below.
